The 38 years old Ex-basketball player who built a $30 million competitor business because he thinks Nike and Adidas aren't doing enough for black people.

Lanny Smith wants someone to challenge sportswear giants like Nike, Adidas and Reebok — so much that he’s trying to do it himself. Smith, 38, is the founder and CEO of Actively Black, the sportswear company he launched in 2020 in the wake of George Floyd’s death. At the time, plenty of big companies were issuing statements condemning racism while pledging to promote diversity and invest in Black communities. The promises rang somewhat hollow for Smith, a former University of Houston basketball star who saw the $170 billion industry as reliant on the Black community’s culture, influence and consumer dollars. Rather than lobbying for change within multibillion-dollar giants, Smith wanted to try beating them at their own game. “A lot of these sports apparel brands have profited off of Black talent,” Smith tells CNBC Make It, referring to numerous endorsement deals with superstar Black athletes. ”[The companies] have profited off of the consumerism from the Black ...

Also on Wednesday, Mr Musk said that towards the end of this year would be a "good time" to find someone to succeed him as the chief executive of Twitter. The document lodged with the US Securities and Exchange Commission showed the donation was made between August and December last year. Tesla did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment. It is not the first time Mr Musk, who has an estimated net worth of $197.5bn, has given Tesla stock to charity. He donated around $5.74bn worth of shares in 2021, according to a regulatory filing. Meet the Ghanaian entrepreneur who built earbuds that can auto-translate 40 languages

We travel and move from continent to continent, country to country, place to place, and through our journey we are more likely to come into contact with people who speak different languages. In these instances, it becomes necessary to find a middle ground to enable smooth and easy communication. As you may well know, language can be a major hinderance to human interactions. And even though giant strides have been made over the years to lessen the communication gaps through various translation tools, challenges remain.  Ghanaian man by the name Danny Manu has invented wireless earbuds that can translate over 40 languages. Goaded on by the need for an item like this in the market, Danny’s product, called Click, is said to be “the world’s first truly wireless earphones” with live voice translation supporting about 40 languages. Information obtained show that not only does Click enable users to converse efficiently in nearly forty languages, it also allows them to call, text and read n...

Bill Gates on the difference between Elon Musk and Steve Jobs

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has had the opportunity to meet and work alongside major tech giants, including late Apple co-founder,   Steve Jobs . In an interview with   Bloomberg , Gates was asked whether his contemporary Elon Musk could be considered the "next Steve Jobs," due to the advancements his companies Tesla and SpaceX have made in electric cars and reusable rockets, respectively.  "If you know people personally, that kind of gross oversimplification seems strange," Gates told Bloomberg in the interview published Thursday. There are some key differences between the way Musk and Jobs operate, Gates said. "Elon's more of a hands-on engineer. Steve was a genius at design and picking people and marketing," Gates said. "You wouldn't walk into a room and confuse them with each other." Indeed, Musk often talks about his  demanding schedule  and his hands on approach. For example, on a  Tesla earnings call  in November 2017, Musk s...

Elizabeth Holmes on trial

In 2014, Elizabeth Holmes, then 30 years old, was on top of the world. A Stanford University drop-out, she had founded a company valued at $9bn (£6.5bn) for supposedly bringing about a revolution in diagnosing disease. Bigwigs from Henry Kissinger to Rupert Murdoch invested. But by 2015, the seams were coming apart, and within a year, Ms Holmes was exposed as a fake. The technology she touted didn't work at all, and by 2018 the company she founded had collapsed. Ms Holmes, now 37, faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty of the 12 charges of fraud against her. She has never previously told her side of the story. Her trial which begins next month, will be closely watched and she is expected to plead not guilty. And in a twist, it emerged this weekend that her lawyers will argue that her ex-boyfriend and business par...
